How well do Champions league winners perform domestically : does continental glory eqaute domestic success

DOES EUROPEAN FLORY EQUATE TO DOMESTIC SUCCESS


Juggling between two top tier competitions is extremely hard and thats what makes good teams into great teams.
First you have to play at the weekend and 3 days later you have to travel for a Champions League match, this routine for an entire season is very hard and is what tests the physicality and squad depth.
It is actually very difficult to do well in all competition, take Manchester United and Spurs, as of now they are 16 and 17 in the league, but both of them played Europa League


We will look at the past 15 champions league winners and see how they faired in their domestic league.




 



2023-24 - Real Madrid : League Winners


In the season 2023- 24,  Real Madrid achieved the 'double' winning both Champions League and La liga.

The European Giants had a fantastic 2023-24 season they won the league quite comfortably finishing with 95 points while runner ups Barcelona with 85, Real Madrid ended their league season with just one loss.
The champions league was not easy, in the round of 16 they faced RB Leipzig, who turned out to be not - so easy, winning 2-1 on aggregate, with Antonio Rudiger dropping great performance.
In the qaurters they faced a very difficult opponent,defending champions of that season - Manchester City. The first leg at Santiago Bernabeu was an absolute thriller where we saw multiple bangers, in the second leg Real Madrid defended exceptionally well and won the match on penalties. In the semi final the faced Bayern Munich, in classic Madrid fashion they killed the game late wherein Joselu scored tow goals in 88 and 91st minute respectively, taking them into the final.

Madrid won the final against Dortmund thanks to the goals by Dani Carvajal and Vini Jr.



2022-23 - Manchester City : League Winners


2022-23 was probably the most important year in City's season where the managed to win the 'Treble', winning not only the league but also the FA Cup.

Man City scored 89 points in the Premier League, Arsenal the runner ups were not too far off behind with 85.
Man city played exceptionally well scoring 93 and conceding just 33.
This was also Erling Haaland's debut season where he broke the record for most goals scored by a player in a Premier League season:36.
They were extremely dominant, 8-1 aggregate victory over Rb Leipzig, 4-1 over Fc Bayern Munich and 5-1 over Real Madrid. The final was rather close, with Rodri scoring the only goal sealing the treble for Man City.


2021-22 - Real Madrid : League Winners


Another season where Real Madrid got the double, they won the La liga quite convincingly with 86 points while runner ups Barcelona with only 73 points. However their champions league campaign was quite a ride with famous comebacks against Man City and Lionel Messi's Psg.
At last they defeated Liverpool with a close scoreline of 1-0.



2020-21 - CHELSEA :4th IN LEAGUE


Chelsea sacked club legend Frank Lampard to appoint German manger Thomas Tuchel mid way through the season by the end of January.
Thomas Tuchel got back European glory for the blues by beating Pep Guardiola's Manchester City. We witnessed another 1-0 scoreline in the final, this time it was Kai Havertz who scored the winning goal.
Chelsea beat Atletico Madrid, Porto and Real Madrid on their way to the final
In the league however they just narrowly secured the 4th place with 67 points just one point more than 5th place Leicester.



2019-20 - FC BAYERN MUNICH: WINNERS 


This was the historic season where FC bayern Munich under Hansi Flick won the 'sextuple'. They were a dominant force in both champions league and the Bundesliga.

In the Bundesliga, they scored a whopping 100 goals in 34 matches whilst conceding only 32, they finished with 82 points, 13 points ahead of Dortmund.

In the Champions League they destroyed anyone who came in their way, across two legs they beat Chelsea  7-1, Barcelona 8-2 and Lyon 3-0.

However we witnessed yet another champions league final with 1-0 scoreline, this time Kingsley Coman scored the deciding goal.




2018-19- LIVERPOOL:RUNNER UP IN LEAGUE


Jurgen Klopp brought back European glory for Liverpool in 2018-19 season.
In the Premier League as well Liverpool were amazing, but Manchester City was just too good.
It was very close and thrilling title race, Liverpool fell short of just one point they score 97 points while Man City scored 98. 

They beat Bayern Munich and Porto in round of 16 and quater final of Champions League.
In the semi final they completed the historic comeback against Barcelona when the lost 3-0 at Camp Nou but overturned by scoring 4 at Anfield and winning the tie 4-3 on aggregate. 




2017-18- Real Madrid :3rd in the League

This was the season where Cristiano Ronaldo's Real Madrid completed their Champions league 3-peat, winning it 3 in a row.
In la liga however they came 3rd behind city rivals Atletico Madrid and Fc Barcelona who won it in that year quite dominantly.
All of Real Madrid's Champions League knockouts were high scoring ties, they beat psg 5-2 on aggregate in round of 16 and defeated both Bayern Munich and Juventus with a scoreline of 3-4 also on aggregate.
Zinedine Zidane's boys beat Liverpool 3-1 in the final, where Loris Karius famously made two key goalkeeping errors .



2016-17 - Real Madrid :WINNERS


This is the Real Madrid team that is arguably one of THE best teams of all time.
They won the La liga with 93 points in a season where Barcelona gave them tough competition(90 points). They scored a total of 104 goals in that League campaign.
They were extremely dominant in the Champions League.
They beat Napoli 6-2, defeated Bayern Munich 3-6 and overcame Atletico Madrid with scoreline of 4-2(all on aggregate obviously).
At last in the final they destroyed Juventus 4-1 at Principality Stadium, Cardiff.



2016-17 - Real Madrid : Runner Up In League


This was the first of the three consecutive champions league titles for Real Madrid.
Real Madrid just narrowly lost the La Liga to Fc Barcelona by just 1 point. Barca had scored 91 while Madrid scored 90.
This was the champions League campaign where Ronaldo scored  hattrick against Wolfsburg in the quater final, they also defeated Roma and Man City to finally reach the Final where the beat their city rivals Atletico Madrid on penalties.

2014-15 - Fc Barcelona :WINNERS


This is the iconic season where Luis Enrique led Barcelon to treble.
This was another very close La Liga title race, there was just two point difference between Barcelona and Real Madrid.
This season was peak MSN year.
They defeated Manchester City, PSG, and Bayern Munich with scorelines of 1-3, 1-5 and 5-3.
Then they faced Juventus in the final where they won with a convincingly 3-1.



2013-14 - Real Madrid : 3rd Position in league


And there we go, we have Real Madrid again. This is the season where they won their 10th champions league- the famous 'LA DECIMA'
They came third in the league, the La Liga title that season was won by their city rivals Atletico Madrid.
The same Atletico Madrid whom they defeated in the Champions league final to lift the trophy, Sergio Ramos with the legendary equaliser at 92:48.



2012-13 - FC BAYERN MUNICH : WINNERS


Bayern Munich very comfortably won the Bundesliga this season.
They scored 91 points in comparison to 2nd place Dortmund who scored 66 points, so that says a lot it was a very very dominant in bundesliga.
In the champions League, they faced the same Dortmund, it was an iconic Der Klassiker final where Bayern Munich won 2-1.
They beat Barcelona, Juventus and Arsenal in the knockouts to reach the final.




2011-12 - CHELSEA : WINNERS


So for the first time in this list a Champions League winner have finished out of top 4.
In this season Chelsea finished at 6th place in the premier League.
Chelsea won on penalties against Bayern Munich in the final to lift the Champions League trophy.



2010-11 - FC BARCELONA: WINNERS


Barcelona won the double this season winning both champions league this season, they even won el classico in the semi final of the champions league.
They beat Manchester United in the final, 3-1.
And ofcourse it was a fairly close title race in la liga where Barca scored 96 and Madrid 92.



2009-10 - INTER: WINNERS


This is the season wherer Jose Mourinho led Inter to the treble, it was a legendary team he assembled.
They defeated Bayern Munich 2-0 in the final.
It was a close title race in Italy between Inter and Roma. only two points separated the two teams.





Out of the 15 champions league winners, 9 of them won the league in the season they won the ucl.
